but first, coffee.

love-for-coffee

but first… coffee.

I am no coffee addict, but I like myself a good coffee every once in a while.  Not gonna lie, I like the coffee that tastes less like actual coffee; add some caramel and some vanilla, that’s my kind of coffee.

Today I am writing about coffee in honor of National Coffee Day!

So here are some benefits of drinking coffee:

Coffee can make you feel happier.

A study done by the National Institute of Health found that those who drink four or more cups of coffee were about 10 percent less likely to be depressed than those who had never touched the java. And apparently it’s not because of the “caffeine high” — Coke can also give you a caffeine high, but it’s linked to depression. Study author, Honglei Chen, MD, PhD, told prevention.com that the proposed reason coffee makes you feel good is because of those trusty antioxidants. – Huffington Post.

Coffee can make you a better athlete.

The New York Times reports, “Scientists and many athletes have known for years, of course, that a cup of coffee before a workout jolts athletic performance, especially in endurance sports like distance running and cycling.” Caffeine increases the number of fatty acids in the bloodstream, which allows athletes’ muscles to absorb and burn those fats for fuel, therefore saving the body’s small reserves of carbohydrates for later on in the exercise. – Huffington Post

Drinking coffee could help keep your brain healthier for longer.

Researchers from the University of South Florida and the University of Miami found that people older than 65 who had higher blood levels of caffeine developed Alzheimer’s disease two to four years later than others with lower caffeine. Dr. Chuanhai Cao, a neuroscientist at the USF, and co-author of the study, said, “We are not saying that moderate coffee consumption will completely protect people from Alzheimer’s disease. However, we firmly believe that moderate coffee consumption can appreciably reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s or delay its onset.” – Huffington Post

This one really speaks to me because my grandma died of Alzheimer’s, and watching that disease take over her was heartbreaking.  She got it when I was fairly young, so most of the memories of my grandma consist of visiting her in a home, but her not knowing who I was or communicating with us at all.  I think the worst part was watching my Grandpa care for her and love her for years, when some days she didn’t even know who he was, and didn’t say a word; one can only wonder what was going through her head.  I can only hope they one day find a cure.

Coffee may make you more intelligent.

You usually drink coffee when you are sleep-deprived, right? Well, that much-needed jolt not only keeps you awake, it makes you sharper. CNN reports that coffee allows your brain to work in a much more efficient and smarter way. TIME reporter, Michael Lemonick, says, “When you’re sleep-deprived and you take caffeine, pretty much anything you measure will improve: reaction time, vigilance, attention, logical reasoning — most of the complex functions you associate with intelligence.” – Huffington Post

Obviously, I think getting sleep is very important, but for those nights when you just didn’t get enough… grab a coffee.

Coffee is super-concentrated with antioxidants and is especially high in one group of antioxidant compounds called flavonoids. The flavonoids have garnered considerable scientific interest because of their beneficial effects on human health. In various journal studies they have been reported to possess antioxidant, antiviral, anti-allergic, anti-platelet, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor activities.

Coffee’s antioxidant compounds include caffeic acid, caffeine, the chlorogenic acids, eugenol, gamma-tocopherol, isoeugenol, p-coumaric acid, scopoletin and tannic acid. In fact, coffee is the primary source of beneficial, protective antioxidants in the American diet. Most Americans do not eat enough antioxidant-rich fresh fruits and vegetables, but they do drink coffee. The bottom line? Coffee protects your body. This is a good thing. –  http://www.medicinehunter.com

More Protein, More Lean Muscle.

vitamind

More Protein, More Lean Muscle.

First off.. I hope everyone got out and enjoyed the weekend!  Here in Utah everyone gets so excited when it gets warmer; I just feel happier when the sun is shining on my face and the windows are down in the car!  Utah would be paradise, at least for me, if you completely eliminated the winter season :)!

As summer is approaching, you will see all the “get fit for summer” diets, etc come out of the works.  I am a Diet Nazi; what’s the point of some 21 day fix, just to put you right where you started when you aren’t eating some super low calorie diet, or wasting your day with some outrageous amount of time on the treadmill anymore?  Pointless!  Make changes to your every day life and make it a lifestyle to keep you healthier and fit all life long!

I am not a licensed nutritionist, but most of the people I have helped train and workout with, don’t realize how much protein they need.  Adding more protein is critical if you are trying to build lean muscle and lose fat.

Here is a great article that explains why protein is so important:

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/women-and-protein-your-complete-guide.html

Here are some great items to add to your “diet”, and by “diet”, I mean: what you are eating everyday.

lightcottagecheese

Low Fat Cottage Cheese – I love to add fruit to my cottage cheese!

beefjerky

Beef Jerky is always my go to on road trips!

boiled eggs

I’LL ADMIT I HAVE AN OBSESSION WITH BOILED EGGS!

If you love real lime juice, cut your boiled eggs in half, and drizzle lime juice on top of them… love this!

lightgreekyogurt

Trying adding some grapes to your greek yogurt!  I absolutely love the sweet/tart combo!

 lightstringcheese

I probably eat a bag of the 24 pack of string cheese of week.

The light string cheese has more protein than the normal string cheese, who wouldn’t want the light anyways?

kiss

Just thought I would give you a glimps at my amazing weekend!  Happy almost Spring!

Thanks for stopping by!

Finding Balance

Screen Shot 2014-02-09 at 9.53.44 AM

THE SECRET TO FINDING BALANCE

I am in the process of finding balance between living, being healthy, and being fit.  I am no longer that girl carrying around canned tuna and franks red hot sauce in her purse, that girl setting up camp on the stair-mill, or that girl that fears that too many carbs could possibly cause her roll over and die!  However, I am the girl that may or may not have had some starbursts with breakfast this morning… which is not a regular occurrence; I am definitely not encouraging unhealthy habits.  Sure I am no longer that girl with 8% bodyfat and about 10lbs lighter, but I am a girl that is working on being happy with herself, no matter what the scale says, or what percentage body fat I am.  I made the mistake of letting myself think that once I got down to my goal weight or once I hit that lower number in body fat… that it would make me happy with every part of myself!  The truth is when I was 8% bodyfat and just under 100lbs… I don’t remember once thinking to myself, I am happy!  Letting myself believe that my happiness is based on my outside appearance is still a daily struggle.

I don’t want to encourage being unhealthy, or not going to the gym or working on your fitness, but I do want to encourage finding balance between what is important in life as a whole, rather than the importance of fitting into those smaller jeans.  Spend just as much time working on loving what you have on the inside, as you spend working on what is on the outside.

Find what you love about yourself on the inside before you let the what’s on the outside dictate your happiness!

Warning… let me be honest, I am still apprehensive about these photos, and I am sorry if they offend any of you.  These photos are about acceptance and loving the body you have right now… in this moment!

Sparkle & Sweat Sparkle Sport Watch
Stay or Get the Boot?
There are a few more Sparkle Sport Watches left in my Etsy Shop. I am trying to decide if this is a product I will continue to carry in my Etsy Shop, as well as carry over to my website I am creating. I would love some input. I would like to think that everyone has the same taste as me, because that would mean everyone has amazing taste (just kidding)… turns out, not everyone likes the same things as me!

Let me know if the Sparkle Sport Watches are something you think should stay in my Collection, or get the boot! Btw… they are Jelly Sport watches; the watches are hand sparkled by me with Swarovski Rhinestones.

My Journey and Fitness Tips!

I am no expert, but I have learned a few things over the years.  When I first started getting into fitness, which was in my teens, I had no idea.  The only thing I knew was running, my moms pilates videos, and not eating.  I honestly remember writing myself a sticky note that I placed on my mirror, which looked like this…

stickynote

Anyone who knows anything about health and fitness, could tell me, that this was a recipe for disaster.  And it was.  Over the course of one summer, I exercised a ton, and would hardly eat.  Yet, I couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t losing weight, or getting skinnier.  I would run almost everyday, then do pilates, sometimes 2 full videos, with additional push ups, sit ups, and jumping jacks before bed, all while not nearly eating enough.  This eventually sprouted into an eating disorder, I turned to bingeing and then throwing my food if I ever felt I ate too much. Thankfully my mother caught me throwing up after a few weeks, and put a stop to that nonsense! Boy do I wish I could go back in time and slap myself in the face!

Luckily I grew out of that terrible phase.  I began cheerleading in highschool, which didn’t leave me with a lot of time to sit and worry, which I think was the reason for my reckless summer, too much time to think.  I cheered all through highschool and college, then began coaching.  After I stopped coaching cheerleading, I felt lost.  I had always had an interest in fitness, and cheerleading was my fitness, but without cheerleading… what was there?!  That folks, is when I discovered the GYM!

I started at the Gym as any newcomer does… alittle bit lost.  I have come along way and as I look back at my journey I am happy for all the trial and error, the endless hours spent surfing the web for answers, and let’s not mention all the awkward people watching at the gym.  But if I can make it easier for someone on their fitness journey I am happy to help!  Now remember, I don’t claim to be an “expert”, but I am an open book!  Here is a list of some fitness tips I have compiled over the course of my fitness journey!

Check out the list of tips below!

Hopefully these tips have helped you in some way!  Just remember that the only competition you should have is yourself.  Comparing yourself to others is not healthy, if you look at yourself negatively because of it.  You can’t compare yourself to someone you will never be… you will only be you.  Now focus on making the best you!

Recap:

  1. If you are new to the gym, check out the classes that are offered.
  2. Less Cardio – More Resistance Training.
  3. Consistency is key!
  4. Learning to love yourself as you are, right now,  is more important that being a size XS.
  5. Everyone is different, find what motivates you, and USE IT!

Please excuse any spelling or grammar errors…
